Crabgrass: A Truly Pesky Weed!

Not sure if it’s crabgrass? Ask us!  It is light green to yellowish-green in color and spreads in a low-growing pattern, with stems that grow outward in a star-like or crab-like formation. The blade is much more coarse than traditional grass, and it can grow up to 2 feet wide if left unchecked.

A single crabgrass plant can generate thousands of seeds! Those seeds germinate once soil temperatures reach a sustained 50-60 degrees and it spreads quickly to other areas of the lawn. This weed thrives in areas with poor soil conditions and thin grass coverage.

It negatively impacts the lawn by competing with desirable grasses for nutrients and creates an uneven lawn texture. What can you do about crabgrass? Best practice for this weed is to focus on prevention with properly timed pre-emergent treatment and maintaining a thick, healthy lawn through use of fertilizers. In addition to Green Horizon’s 6 step program, mowing weekly at 3-4 inches and deep, infrequent watering is crucial to get the most out of topical applications.

Your lawn care technician will inform you of soil and other conditions which warrant further action on your part to get the most out of Green Horizon’s turf fertilization and weed control program.
