Fall Aeration & Overseeding Results: When You’ll See New Grass

Will there be more grass to come from fall aeration & overseeding?

The answer is yes! Seeds that have not germinated will remain in the ground until conditions are right for germination in the spring. Seeds that stay dormant through the winter typically germinate earlier in the spring.

Having seed in the ground for the first warm-up of spring can be an advantage when trying to establish grass in areas shaded by deciduous trees. Because those trees don’t have leaves in early spring, more sunlight can reach areas that may be too shaded during the rest of the year to yield strong results.

Another potential benefit of dormant seed germinating in early spring is reduced weed pressure. The new turf has more time to fill in before spring weeds begin to flourish.
