Hot Topic on the Horizon: Mowing Techniques and Tips for Terrific Turf

As we leap into early Spring it’s time to start thinking about mowing your lawn. Turf fertilization and weed control in the Spring is temperature dependent, so there is never a guaranteed start date and there is also no hard start date you can put on your calendar to begin mowing each year. It’s a wait and see game! While you’re waiting, there are still tasks you can do to get you ready for spring and summer mowing.

If you didn’t get your mower serviced before you stored it for winter (and most people don’t) get to it now. We can almost guarantee a wait time if you delay your mower service until it’s time to start mowing. Maintaining your mower and practicing proper mowing techniques are key to ensuring your lawn stays healthy and your mower runs efficiently. Here are some homeowner tips:

Proper Mowing Techniques

  1. Mowing once a week is ideal for most lawns. This helps keep the grass healthy, prevents weeds, and ensures even growth.
  2. Cutting too short can stress the grass and make it more susceptible to diseases and weeds. For most grass types, keep the height around 3-4 inches.
  3. Avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass height in a single mow.
  4. Mowing wet grass can lead to uneven cuts and clumping. Mow when the grass is dry for the cleanest and healthiest cut.
  5. Changing the direction you mow in helps prevent permanent tracks in the grass and promotes more even growth.
  6. If the grass is not too long, leave the clippings on the lawn as mulch. They can decompose and return nutrients to the soil. However, if the grass is long, bagging the clippings might be necessary to avoid smothering the grass.
  7. Avoid mowing when the sun is at its peak (early afternoon.) It’s best to mow in the morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler, and the grass is less stressed.
  8. A well-maintained mower ensures clean, even cuts and reduces the strain on the engine.
  9. Stop mowing and stay off the lawn when the lawn is stressed due to heat and drought.

Lawn Mower Maintenance Tips

  1. To keep the engine running smoothly, change the oil after every 50 hours of use or at least once a season.
  2. Sharpen the mower blades every 1-2 months or after every 25 hours of use so you get a clean cut. Dull blades tear grass, which can make the lawn look ragged and increase the risk of disease.
  3. Since grass and debris can accumulate under the deck, clogging it and affecting performance, clean the mower after each use. Use a hose, scraper, or blower to clean the mower deck after each use.
  4. A dirty air filter can reduce engine efficiency. Replace it yearly, or more often if you mow frequently in dusty conditions.
  5. Inspect the spark plug for wear or buildup. Clean or replace it annually for optimal ignition.
  6. Use fresh gasoline, as old fuel can clog the carburetor. Add fuel stabilizer or drain the gas if you plan to store the mower for several months. *If you use ethanol-free fuel you do not need to use a fuel stabilizer OR need to drain the gas for winter.*
  7. Apply oil or grease to moving parts such as wheels and the drive shaft to ensure smooth operation.
  8. Store your mower in a dry, cool place to prevent rust. If you’re storing it for the off-season, empty the fuel tank or use fuel stabilizer.
