Chickweed loves Virginia’s cool seasons, often popping up when lawns are dormant. It is a winter annual weed that can grow up to 3-6 inches tall in the sun and up to 18 inches in the shade.
Chickweed can be identified by its small, oval leaves with tiny, white star-shaped flowers.
Seasonality: Chickweed thrives in late fall, winter and early spring.
Impact on turf: Chickweed forms dense mats that smother grass/turf, so prevention is optimal, rather than treating after flowering. Chickweed is also a host plant for pests and diseases.
